Breast cancer

Regular breast examination is essential for
early detection of breast cancer!

BREAST CANCER?
It is a mass composed of cancer cells that formed in the breast.
It was ranked the 1st among female cancers over the period of 2003~2008
and breast cancer manifests in 1 out of every 25 women in Korea even until now.
As such, it is the second most common cancer in women next to thyroid cancer.

Cause of manifestation of breast cancer

Similar to other cancers, there is nothing that has been clearly disclosed.
However, the hypothesis that female hormone can cause breast cancer is thought to be quite convincing, along with discussions of past family history, past history and inheritance of breast cancer, virus, history of childbirth, eating habit such as consumption of fatty food, etc. and exposure to radiation are being discussed as possible causes of breast cancer.
Results of analysis of those with breast cancer
  • icon

Women with past family history of breast cancer among one’s mother or sister

  • icon

    Women who does not breastfeed

  • icon

Women with mutation of genes related to breast cancer

  • icon

    Obese women after menopause

  • icon

Women with past history of breast cancer

  • icon

Women who consumes alcoholic beverage and animal fat excessively

  • icon

Women for whom atypical cells were detected in breast biopsy

  • icon

Women who took oral contraceptive pill for long time

  • icon

Women who are stimulated by hormone for long time due to early start of menstruation or delayed menopause

  • icon

Women who are currently undergoing or have been taking combined estrogen + progesterone hormone replacement therapy

  • icon

Women who gave birth after the age of 30 years or no experience of childbirth

  • icon

Women with past history of endometrial cancer, ovarian cancer and colorectal cancer

img

Since it is closely associated with pregnancy and menstruation, it can be presumed that it is related to female hormones.

Risk factors of breast cancer

  • img

Genetic factor Those with family members with history of breast cancer among the parents or relatives of direct blood line or over 2 generations have high risk of breast cancer.
If the mother, sister or daughter has history of breast cancer, risk of manifestation of breast cancer increases by about 1.5~3 folds.

  • img

First menstruation and ovulation It appears that the age of first menstruation and establishment of regular ovulation period is closely related to manifestation of breast cancer.
That is, if the age of first menstruation is delayed by 1 year, the risk of manifestation of breast cancer decreases by about 20%.
Generally, the prevalence rate of breast cancer increases as one ages until the time of menopause, reaching the peak in the 40’s and 50’s, and then decreases thereafter.

  • img

Past history of childbirth Women with no past history of childbirth 1.4 times higher possibility of manifestation of in comparison to those with such experience.
Women who had their first child after the age of 30 years has possibility of manifestation that is 2~5 times higher than that of those who gave birth to their first child in their early 20’s.
Results of a study conducted on women in Korea displayed the trend of significant decrease in the prevalence rate of breast cancer for women with more extensive childbirth at the full term of pregnancy.

  • img

Breastfeeding Women after their menopause with experience of childbirth at full term of pregnancy displayed lower prevalence rate of breast cancer particularly if they had prolonged breastfeeding period for their first child.

  • img

Oral contraceptive pill It has not be clearly disclosed whether administration of oral contraceptive pill increases the risk of breast cancer or not.
However according to numerous reports, it was disclosed that the risk of breast cancer can increase by 2~4 folds in accordance with the period of administration of oral contraceptive pill.

  • img

Benign breast disorders It is known that non-proliferative benign breast disorder that is observed frequently among all the benign breast disorders does not increase the risk of breast cancer.
Therefore, although it was reported that fibrocystic disorder or fibroadenoma, etc. that occur frequently in women in their 20’s and 30’s has no trend of becoming malignant, breast cancer detected within fibroadenoma was reported intermittently in the recent years caused some controversies regarding such possibility.
In addition, Lump or diseases of thymus gland and past history of exposure to radiation also increase the risk of breast cancer.

  • img

Obesity Based on the study results in Korea, although body weight of pre-menopause women and breast cancer are not correlated, prevalence rate of breast cancer is increasing with increase in body weight of women after menopause.

  • img

Smoking and drinking There is a report that drinking alcohol at the rate of 1~2 glasses a day slightly increases the prevalence rate of breast cancer, and the correlation is the highest in young women under the age of 30 years.
In particular, although it is reported that smoking women have higher prevalence rate of breast cancer in comparison to non-smoking women, the correlation between caffein intake and breast cancer is not clear.

Symptoms of breast cancer

If Lump palpated in the breast is cancer, one will be able to palpate hard and irregular lump that is not painful in general.
Although it is occasionally accompanied with breast pain, it is benign in more than 90% of them.
Even if Lump can be palpated in the breast, it is most likely that it is not a breast cancer. As such, you should undergo accurate examination at a breast clinic.
  • img Lump

The most common symptom of breast cancer is Lump that can be palpated.
However, since presence of Lump does not necessarily mean it is breast cancer, it is desirable to undergo examination by specialist at a breast clinic.

  • img Nipple secretion

If interstitial fluid that looks like clear water is secreted, this is not pathogenic.
In particular, secretion that are secreted only if the nipple is squeezed are not problematic.
However, if secretion such as blood (that flows out naturally without being squeezed) is excreted, breast cancer could be suspected.

  • img Changes in the skin

In many cases, changes in the skin including retraction of skin, ulcer, Lump in armpit, etc.
manifested as cancer progresses are the results of substantial progression of breast cancer. Accordingly, you must undergo precision examination as soon as possible.

Treatment of breast cancer

Full remission rate of breast cancer is high if treated in its initial stage.
In the case of coronary endothelial cancer, which is a stage 0 breast cancer, the 5-year survival rate after the surgery is almost 100% and if the lump size is less than 2cm and cancer has not spread to lymph node in armpit (stage 1),
the 5-year survival rate is very high at about 98%.
  • 01

    Partial mastectomy

It is the method of excising the breast cancer tissues along with portion of the normal tissues in the surrounding. It is executed to maintain the original shape of the breast.
  • 02

    Total mastectomy

It is the method of excising the entire breast tissues including the nipple and areola and can also remove microcarcinoma that may exist in other area of the breast.
  • 03

    Other methods

There are a wide range of excision methods including skin-conserving mastectomy, areola and nipple conservation surgery and endoscopic mastectomy, etc.

Execution of adjuvant therapy for prevention of recurrence after the surgery

  • 01

    Anticancer chemotherapy

  • 02

    Radiotherapy

  • 03

    Hormone therapy

  • 04

Targeted therapeutic agent that selectively suppresses particular genes that are associated with breast cancer.

Probability of manifestation of breast cancer will increase
if you undergo breast augmentation surgery?!

Since the breast implant is inserted under the breast muscles that are distanced from the breast tissues,
they do not impart mutual influences.
Therefore, insertion of implant for breast augmentation is irrelevant to manifestation of breast cancer.
Breast muscles are situated below the breast tissues and implant is inserted under these muscles to push the breast tissues and muscles upward. Therefore, it could be helpful in early detection of breast cancer on the contrary.
